Aw, we're playing with words and symbols here, but that's what writers do. Newsletters proliferate out here in cyberspace, and like most stories, their contents make them work or not — check out ours (& it gets better when you pay for one of our products). However, an interesting name couldn't hurt; see explanation below.

Explanation of the Name

So, we've named our newsletter the perpendE¤lar, a compound of the following words and symbols:

  1. per•pend \(')per-"pend\ verb [ME, fr. L perpendere, fr. per- thoroughly + pendere to weigh — more at per-, pendant] (15c):
    • verb transitive: to reflect on carefully : PONDER
    • verb intransitive: to be attentive : REFLECT

  2. E = a slightly different version of the ubiquitous "e" used to connote the electronic form of something, although its overuse has pushed some people to adapt other letters, like "i" (as in "information")
  3. ¤ = the geometry symbol for circle, supposedly first used by Heron around 150CE
  4. "lar" turns ¤ into "circular" which also means "a paper (as a leaflet) intended for wide distribution (1789)"
The resemblance to "perpendicular" is strictly intentional. We leave it to you to work out why; let's just say it has something to do with standing out from the crowd.
